After opening and closing a sanatorium in Shattuck, Newman continued providing medical services to the surrounding area, traveling on horseback to visit patients in need. In 1920, he founded a hospital in that town that has not only survived for a century, but thrived—earning itself a fairly fancy nickname for the high level of care it provides to patients in a four-state region.
