Longtime Okies owe a debt of gratitude to Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. Were it not for their inventive lyrics and toe-tapping melodies, we wouldn't know to say, "The wind is really sweeping down the plains" on days of inclement weather. But while Oklahoma! is a cultural phenomenon that is, in many ways, deeply entrenched in our collective state consciousness, it was not created from thin air. The long-running musical that debuted in 1943 was based on an unsuccessful play first staged more than a decade prior.

What play was Oklahoma! based on and who wrote it?
